White Villages of Andalucia, Spain

The traditional white villages of Andalucia offer cool beauty in the summer heat and some great value for money properties.

Competa

Spanish White Village Andalucia

Spanish White Village in Andalucia

Competa is situated 49 kilometres from Malaga and 18 kilometres inland from the coast at Torrox Costa, at an altitude of 636 metres. Cómpeta offers spectacular views across the mountains of the Tejeda National Park and to the Mediterranean. A pretty white-washed village which has retained its original Moorish layout and boasts plenty of shops, bars, restaurants and banks as well as a market, municipal swimming pool and bus service to the coast.

Competa is particularly popular with foreign residents, especially Scandinavians, who have renovated old farmhouses and fincas in the vicinity. It is well for its locally produced wine, available both dry and sweet, which is plentiful and cheap. One of the most popular annual fiestas here is the Noche del Vino (Night of the Wine) on the 15th August which features a programme of flamenco and other music and dance, accompanied by free-flowing wine

A thriving village of three thousand, life revolves around the central Plaza Almijara with its street cafes, bars and shops as well as the 16th century church.

Frigiliana

6 kilometres inland from the coast at Nerja and 56 kilometres from Malaga, sitting on a mountain ridge in the Almijara mountain range overlooking the sea lies the white painted village of Frigiliana. Voted as the prettiest village in Andalucia by the Spanish tourist authority, it has received several awards for conservation and beauty and enjoys spectacular views.

High up in the Sierra Tejeda mountains the views from the village are breathtaking. Even the view from the car park on the edge of the town is worth the journey.

There are two adjoining centres, the old quarter of Moorish and Medieval origin and the new quarter, built fairly recently but imitating the architectural style of the old village.

The local shops sell handicrafts and the sweet local wine. There are a number of bars and cafes – some very small. In the centre a small square in front of the church provides a welcome stopping point

Around the town, ceramic plaques depict a battle fought in the Alpujarran rebellion of 1568 which extended throughout a large part of southern Andalucía. Nearly 4,000 Moriscos (Arabs who had been baptised Christians) unsuccessfully defended the castle against almost equal numbers of Catholic infantry and calvary. Afterwards the castle was torn down stone by stone.

Algarrobo

4 kilometres inland from the Algarroba Costa and 38 kms east of Malaga, Algarrobo Pueblo is an Arabic white village with attractive narrow streets bedecked with flowers and plants. The Rio Algarrobo river passes through the village and horses are often found grazing on the banks. This town is noted for its pancakes. Nearby is the Trayamar Necropolis, where Phoenician and Punic tombs from the 8th century BC have been found and the ruins of a city from the 10th century BC.

Torrox Pueblo

Some 47 kilometres from Malaga, Torrox Pueblo is a traditional Andalucian white village on the side of a mountain 4 kilometres inland from Torrox Costa. Of Arabic origins it has a labyrinth of narrow windings streets radiating up and out from the main square by some very steep steps.
