Mijas

Spanish Mountain Village of Ronda

Ronda, Spain

Inland from the coast, the Mijas mountain range is known as "The Lung of the Costa del Sol" due to its dense pine woods and, amongst these woods, lies the Moorish whitewashed town of Mijas. Perched on a terrace of 500m above Fuengirola and the sea, from its elevated position you can enjoy a view of the entire Costa del Sol and even the African mountains. Well kept and sparkling from the mountain air, the streets are full of bars and restaurants. The town centre follows the classic Arab structure of narrow streets and whitewashed walls and has been home to artists and foreigners, attracted by its picturesque quality and the beauty of the surrounding countryside.

Coin

Lying on the banks of the River Seco in a beautiful valley, Coin is a small farming village famous for the quality of its fruit and vegetables. There's an Arabian Castle, where, according to legend, Christopher Columbus was part of the Catholic Kings' entourage during the siege and surrender of this village.

Ojen

Perched at an altitude of 200 m near to Marbella and the centre for excursions to the Sierra Blanca mountain range. A typical Arabic town centre, steep, narrow streets and a parish church that was once a mosque.

Ronda

Inland and part of the Malagan region, is the town of Ronda. The evergreen oaks, pines and Spanish firs in Ronda's mountains are a magnificent sight. Ronda, capital of this mountain area, perched at an altitude of 750 metres, is divided by a 150 metre long cleft which splits it into two parts - La Ciudad and El Mercadillo. These are re-united by the eighteenth century stone Nuevo Bridge. La Ciudad has preserved the traditional atmosphere of its narrow streets, balconies with typical gratings, palaces and old churches whilst El Mercadillo is the commercial and administrative centre but also boasts noteworthy buildings and churches.

Casares

In the Bermeja range 12 kms from the coast at Estepona at an altitude of 435 metres is one of the most picturesque andalucian villages, Casares. It appears to be clinging off a pyramid-shaped rock with the Manilva River below and was once a Roman settlement and an Arab fortress. Packed with white houses, flower-decked streets and tiny plazas from which panoramic views can be enjoyed of the surrounding area. Closeby are the remains of an ancient Iberian village.

La Fuente De Piedra Lagoon

Based near to a village of the same name, this saltwater lagoon with no natural drainage channel covers a massive surface area of 1,300 hectares. The lagoon and surrounding area is the top European flamingo-breeding colony and, in the middle of March each year, a large colony of flamingos arrive at the lagoon and remain there until the end of September when the young have been born and they set off on the return journey to Senegal.

Antiquera

A fair-sized market town close to a soaring rock, known as the Pena de los Enamorados (The Lover's Rock. Sites worthy of mention are the prehistoric dolmen burial chambers in the Cueva de Viera, Menga and Romeral, the parador and the narrow streets in the well-preserved Moorish Quarter.
